Captain America #16 Review –“A Young Woman Who’s All Alone Might Not Be Alone After All.”

Intro

As I read the Captain America series, I really liked the interesting take of putting Captain America in a whole new world and having the responsibility of having and losing a child. It really puts an edge and makes him realize that raising a child is just as hard as being a superhero.  We also get to learn about a new interesting character name Jet Black. She a young teenage woman who still doesn’t understand the two worlds she lived in are one and the same. We also see the struggles and the emotion toll Captain America has to deal with losing a child he considered his own and learning to cope with it. This issue we explore more on Jet Black perspective of how she views the new world she’s in. It’s really one aspect you should look at.

Story

Jet Black is off exploring a new world that she doesn’t quite understand. Plus, she meets an old nemesis of Captain America that installs a new fear of understanding.

The Good

It seems we are learning more about Jet Black on how different she views this world compared to hers. The issue does really good job of seeing from her perspective and she feels as an outsider. It really shows how young she is and still learning to grow up.

The art looks very beautiful especially with the use of snow and action. She has very neat poses as she roof tops from building to building. The art give a very solid detail and makes everything look so fluid.  You can also see what’s going on with the characters and the action. But sadly the good art is only temporarily.

The Bad

What I meant by temporary is the art at the second half really grows into an ugly turn. It starts to look really muddled and less detailed. It looks like the art got very rushed at the end.  It’s very weird because you see all this pretty art in the beginning and turns into ugliness too quickly at the end. This issue may seem like a bad jumping on point because there is no flashback to what happened in the previous issues instead it explains it in words. But I don’t think it matters because the .NOW titles come with a volume of issues that leads to the story for free.

Verdict

I give this issue a 4.5/9.5 out of 5/10 stars. It’s a really great issue that adds character to Jet Black. We are getting to know more about her and seeing how much of a flawed individual she is. The art is really beautiful with great snowy effects but suddenly by the very end it turns muddy and rushed. But if you really want to learn about Jet Black then I suggest you really get it. This is a really good series that expands Captain America emotions in a new level which is worth picking up.
