Magneto #9 Review –“The Intimidation of a Threat.”

Overview

Magneto has been one of the most gratifying series I look forward to every month. Cullen Bunn has made Magneto to a very deep emotional man who cares deeply for his kind or anyone who’s innocent against their predators. Bunn has found way to make me feel for this man and sometimes I even feel admiration for this man’s pride, because he takes no hesitation whatsoever to eliminate any threat. Magneto is also a man who has experienced a dark past with being a Jew during the Holocaust which Bunn truly captures as a great emotional historical piece. It really allows us to feel bad not just for this fictional character’s experience, but the experience of what the Jews did during the times of our past. It’s what I like the most in the series because it makes realize how lucky we are to live to way we are now because other people have had it way worse than we ever did. Another, great thing Bunn does is that he actually acknowledges how Magneto’s personality has changed or evolved over the years. He really shows that his man has changed the error of his ways for the better. So, he no longer hates all humans or blame all of them for the sake a certain few humans who lack sympathy for any other humans or mutants or any intelligent species in general and he actually shows care for anyone he has to save or feel endangered by a threat no matter who they are or where they come from. This makes me appreciate the man even more because it goes to show that any flawed man who was misunderstood can change himself to become a better man and we are also able to forgive what he has done in the past. I also actually appreciated that Marvel has not decided and probably not going to, to change Magneto into a fully blown villain ever again. It truly defines that characters can go to an actually character development that permanently changes the character and never has to go to the original status quo. So, for a character has gone through a great change is definitely something you check into. It’s a great series that’s deeply emotional and a historical piece and once again this issue proves that. It definitely one of the best issues I read and it even shows that this man isn’t as powerful as we thought he is.

Story

After hearing about mutants being imprisoned and threaten in Genosha, Magneto goes in there to investigate who is behind all this and what is actually going on.

The Good

This is definitely one issue to look into. It was great to see Magneto to walk into Genosha and truly relive the dark past experience he had during the holocaust. Genosha really reminded him of the dark times where he was forced to burn the corpses of his own Jewish heritage kind and now for him to see that mutants and inhumans are forced to do the same thing he was once had to do was truly tragic. It even makes me think back to our historical history and make me feel even sadder for the Jews traumatized experience. It’s also nice to see Magneto in true anger when he finds out about the Red Skull has been doing to Charles Xavier. He really shows how deeply he still cares for his endearing friend that means so much to him.  Another, great thing is when Magneto brings out some type of phobia when he sees Red Skull because it reminds of a man who always brought in fear and doubt during his times in the holocaust. It really makes me realize that Magneto isn’t an all-powerful man and somehow his past haunts him to this very day and to see a man who can fear of someone that is maybe a lesser or weaker man than him is truly daunting. It really brings out the true power of what a phobia can do to a man.

Gabriel’s art maybe not great detail in action or character models, but he does a great job on the face expressions. He really shows the great fear into Magneto’s eyes when he relives his experience or when he falls into the phobia. It really makes me even in deep sadness to see the expressions in Magneto’s face and even in the face of innocent people he meets in Genosha. Gabriel does a great job in bring out your true emotions from the characters’ feelings.

The Bad

There’s nothing I can find really bad in this issue. The only thing I can say is that Gabriel needs to work on his action detail. It’s really not that expansive and not much detail into what’s going on. It’s what Gabriel needs to work on in his art style. But other than that his art usually comes out great and I can see that he has a talent in face expressions.

Theme

The theme in this issue is Phobia. Phobia is an extreme fear over something that may have hurt you through trauma when you experienced it for the first time. The curious phenomenon is how the person, place or thing can even be weaker than you can somehow make you feel underpowered or weaken by the fear of it. It truly shows the power a phobia can have. Phobia can even trigger experiences or memories that gave you dark fear within you. This is what I saw in Magneto, he was afraid of Red Skull because of man he reminded him as in a dark past. He even forgot how much power he can over this man. The phobia really made this man feel so powerless and threaten over a man who can potential have lesser power than him.

Verdict

I give this issue a 4.8/9.8 out 5/10 stars. This issue is a great emotional historical piece. It really allows us to see through Magneto’s eyes to what he has experienced back then and even now. Bunn does a good way of showing Magneto go through all emotions of fear, doubt, anger and sadness. It really makes you feel for Magneto or any of mutants or inhumans experiencing this tragedy. I also love to see that Magneto still has his past haunts him and even a man like Red Skull can bring out his phobia. It’s really amazing me how can someone bring out that power over him. Not only the story brings in the emotions, but the art from Gabriel does it as well. It does a great job on showing the characters’ face expressions that truly brings the emotions out of you. The only downside of this issue is the undetailed action. But anything besides that is phenomenal. This is one issue that’s definitely a must buy. It really brings those deep dark emotions of sadness and the fact that it brings relevance to our history makes it perfect. It was definitely one of my picks of that week. I really recommend you get this issue. It will really satisfy you.
